英語表現演習4 (金 1限): Bases of common materials・一般な物質の素

Hello!

How are you? Today here are some pictures that each show a basis of some common material (物質).

Let's look at one example - glass. Look at the beautiful stained glass in the picture at the top. Before anything, what would be one thing you need to make glass?

You first need silica sand, which you can see below:

You would also need limestone, which you can also see here:

These are examples of two (2) things you would need to make glass.

Activity/homework

So let's try this! Look at these pictures below. Can you guess which bases you need to form some common materials? Can you match the right materials to the right bases? In addition, can you think of some other possible bases on your own that you might need to make these common materials?

Here are the materials:

plastic     paper     steel     rubber

Here are the bases:

oil       latex     iron
  water     carbon     pulp

Let's start!

Have fun!

英語表現演習4 (土 2限): Beginning understanding genetics・遺伝学の初めて理解

Hello!

How are you? Today, to go with our first reading, here is a short and funny, but informative animated video, about genetics (遺伝学).

Before we start, here are the board notes for our first class from last week on 9/21:

As you can see, we didn't have enough time to get to the blogpost activity. So let's do this!

Activity/homework

While you may understand the basic building blocks of genetics, the video uploaded here may show it in a simple yet effective way.

Watch this video and take some notes. What might be the most important points the video makes?

Now imagine that you have to explain about genetics to someone who doesn't know much about it. Based on this video, how would you explain it? What kinds of things would you say?

You can use easy English for this - in fact, the easier, the better!

NEW! Here are the board notes for our class on 9/28:

I hope you enjoy this! See you next week!

英語表現演習e (金 5限): Transportation・交通

Hello!

How are you? Today we'll look at different types of transportation (交通) in different places.

Look at the picture at the top. It's of a Nagasaki tram at the end of the 19th and beginning of the early 20th century. Have you ever been to Nagasaki? If so, perhaps you have ridden on one of their trams, like the one below:

Activity/homework
Let's look at these different types of transportation in some different places. Talk about them. If you have never been to any of these places, which would you like to try?

If you have - talk about what kind of transportation you took. If you have traveled to another country that is not in one of these pictures, what kind of transportation did you use?

Tuk-tuk, rural Laos

Jeepney, Lezgapi City, the Philippines

Double-decker bus, London

Train in central India

Horse-drawn carriage, Quebec, Canada

Hope you find this interesting.

Here are the board notes for our first class on 9/20 (Once again - my apologies on the wrong dates on the new syllabus!):

英語表現演習4 (金 1限): Describing materials・材質の描写

Hello!

How are you? Today, let's look at how to describe materials (材質を描写して).

Take a look at the steel tubes above. How would you describe their material? You could say that they are hard and strong, as well as heavy

You could also add more to your description - you could say they are durable and robust - this means they can be used for a long time, and they're tough.

Finally, you could also think of some examples of how the material is used

So maybe you could say - The steel in these tubes are hard and strong, as well as durable and robust. It's ideal for all kinds of industrial use, and in everything from construction work to ship building.

Activity
Look at the pictures of these things below. How would you describe the materials? What uses are they good for?

Plastics

Rubber

Wood

Glass

Have fun with these!

NEW! Here is what we covered in our first class for 9/20:

1. Syllabus & guidelines

2. Pre-teaching survey
* Classmates' Q&A
3. Textbook check/Describing materials blogpost
*describing selected materials with partners

Remember to have your surveys ready to hand in next week (9/27) plus textbooks in hand ready to work on in class.

See you then!
