英語表現演習3 (金・2): International standards for electrical plugs & sockets・海外の配線用差込接続器

Hello!

How are you? Today let's look at some international standards for electrical plugs and sockets.

Look at the picture above. It's an illustration of a electrical plug and socket set from the U.S. from the early 20th century. It's very different from what we have today, isn't it?

Activity
Look at the pictures below. They show different configurations of plugs and sockets from different countries (and areas). Can you guess, and match, the correct configurations with the correct countries and areas?

When you match, describe shapes and configurations as ways to help you guess, and try to remember, where the plugs and sockets might be used.

例えば:A: This socket has two round holes, plus a third one that's semi-circular. The bottom one is the earth, and it's set in a little from the surface for the plug to go in. I'm guessing that it comes from Europe - maybe Northern Europe. I'm not sure, but that's my guess. What do you think?

B: You might be right. We can look this up on the internet. So how about this one? It has three pins on the plug, and the earth is set in a different direction. Where do you think you'd find this? I think maybe in...

U.S./Canada (North America) & Japan        Italy (southern Europe)

the U.K & Ireland        Russia (parts of eastern Europe)

Denmark (northern Europe)        Germany (most of the EU)

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

Homework
When you are finished, do a little research and find out where these plugs and sockets are used

Take care!
See you next class!

英語表現演習1 (3・4限): 中間プレゼンテーションのボードノート

Hello!

How are you? Here are the board notes from today's class about more guidelines and tips for the mid-term presentations next week

Here are a few more things that I talked about in today's classPlease remember

1. You are not presenting from notes! Imagine that you are telling a story about your topic. Try to contextualize (文脈化して) your topic - give a scenario or place that your topic fits with.

2. Your visual aids (photographs, maps, charts, graphs, tables of data, schema, illustrations) are more important than your writing on your displays - but what writing you do have should be spellchecked and if handwritten, clear and in dark ink!

3. Your group will speak for 5-7 minutes - but your talk can include participation from your audience (the members of the other groups you will present to). Have a small quiz or 2-3 questions for your audience about what they might know about your group's topic. They may not know anything - and that's okay. Let them guess or imagine about your topic. You'll tell them about it if they're still not sure!

But it's possible they may know something, or have strong ideas, about your group's topic. That can add to your talk.

The more you can get your audience interested and involved in your presentation talk, the better your time will be and the easier it will get.

So here are more of the board notes:

For the coordinators: Be sure to gather up from your group members the documents I show your group should have in the notes in the top board photo. Bring them to class next week and when we're finished with all the presentations - hand them in!

Good luck and see you next week! I'll look forward to seeing these great presentations.

See you then!

英語表現演習3 (土): Mid-term short group presentation・中間グループプレゼンテーション

Hello!

How are you? Here are the topics, deadline, & guidelines for our mid-term short group presentations.

While I have given all of you the handout about this assignment, I will post it here as another way to help remind you about it.

Topics
Here are your choice of topics. They're based on what we've done so far in class. You can choose one (1) of these:
  • Genetic origins of the Japanese people
  • How children learn/acquire language
  • Facts and/or applications about DNA
  • Genetic facts and other characteristics of twins
Deadlines (締め切り)
Your presentation day will be on June 2nd (6/2), so you have two (2) week(s) to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present.

NEW NOTEhere are all the pair partners you have chosen in class today (5/19):

Guidelines
1. Prepare a summary (要約) about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week (来週)

NEW NOTE - here is an example of what a summary should look like

The summary should have a short introduction showing the topic and any issues or problems, or interesting points about it. Then you and your partner should show that you will then present on what these issues, problems, or points are. It should be short, and indicate (指し示して) what aspect of the topic (話題の向き) you will present on

2. Fill in the topic preparation sheet that comes with the handout. There is a section on it to fill out the summary. This is a working record of your group’s preparation about your topic.

3. Be ready for me to review your progress next week and for you to practice your presentation in-class. You can practice with me and/or other group of students.

4. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present on the day of your class!

Good luck with these! I’ll look forward to seeing your great presentations!

英語表現演習1: Mid-term presentations・中間プレゼンテーション

Hello!

How are you? Today here is a reminder to all of you about our first presentations

While I have already given you the handouts about the presentations, I will post these here again so you can have another way to remember what you have to do.

Topics
Here are your choice of topics. They're based on what we've done so far in class. You can choose one (1) of these:

Issues and solutions about the environment
Facts and other interesting things about our solar system or space

Deadlines (締め切り)
Your presentation day will be on June 1st (6/1), so you have two (2) week(s) to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present.

NEW NOTE - here are the presentation groups for the 3rd period (3限):

Here are the presentation groups for the 4th period (4限):

Guidelines
1. Prepare a summary (要約) with your partners about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week

NEW NOTE ABOUT SUMMARIES - here is an example of what a summary should look like

例えば:While the Earth has the volume of water to sustain life, researchers believe that traces of water exist on the other planets of the Solar System. In our presentation, we will look at the planets in our Solar System that are likely to have water, and if so, what kinds of life they may be able to sustain.

The summary should have a short introduction showing the topic and any issues or problems, or interesting points about it. Then you and your partner should show that you will then present on what these issues, problems, or points are. It should be short, and indicate (指し示して) what aspect of the topic (話題の向きyou will present on

2. With your classmates, fill in the topic preparation sheet that comes with the handout. There is a section on it to fill out the summary. This is a working record of your group’s preparation about your topic.

3. Be ready for me to review your progress next week and for your group to practice your presentation in-class. You can practice with me and/or other group of students.

4. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present on the day of your class!
Good luck! See you next time!
