英語表現演習4 (土 2限): Fall semester final presentations・期末発表

Hello!

Here is our fall semester final presentation assignment.  

Topics & task

Here are your choice of topics. They're based on what we've done so far in class from the textbook since the mid-term (中間). You can choose one (1) of these: 

• Genetic modification in food and plants or traits in humans 
• Ethical and legal issues of DNA application 
• Genetic facts, traits, and behaviors of certain animals  
• Medical possibilities and/or ethical issues in cloning

Guidelines

1. Prepare rough drafts of a summary (要約) and a basic outline (あらすじ) for the presentation, following the guidelines from the handouts I will give you about outlining, about the topic you want to present on. 

The rough summaries and outlines will be due for checking on December 14th (12/14). 

2. On the presentation day, you will hand in final drafts of both the summary and the outline about your presentation topic.

Some starting resources

Instead of a separate supporting blogpost, I have decided to include some links to TED Talks here as some starting sources of information and research. 

You should do your own research, so please search around for more resources of your own - TED Talks you have searched out on your own, YouTube videos, Japanese or English websites on biological science or biotechnology, and such. But these links could help you get started on your research.

Each one of these talks come with Japanese subtitles (字幕) and both English and Japanese transcripts of the talks if you need them. 

Important note: 
Do not copy anything word-for-word from the transcripts! You can point to things a speaker says in a talk, but please do not plagiarize (盗作して) any of the content.

Deadline (締め切り) 

We will do the presentations  on December 21st (12/21), so you have around three (3) weeks to prepare these. 

Special note: 

In your speaking and writing, use some of the vocabulary that you have seen and learned from the textbook, though you are not limited to only vocabulary from those units. 

Once again – you cannot use a written composition as a script for your presentation!

英語表現演習4 (金 1限): Fall semester final presentations・後期末発表

Hello!

How are you? Today I will show you the fall semester final assignment - a presentation with a written summary (要約) and an outline (あらすじ) about a product, component, or piece of equipment.

Topic & task

Prepare a short presentation about any product, component, or piece of equipment used in, or is from, not only mechanical engineering but any field of technology now or in our own time. This could even include IT-related digital applications or components as well. 


Along with this presentation, you will also write a short separate summary showing what you will present about, along with an outline with keywords and key phrases that will be a guide to your topic. 

Guidelines

You have a choice of making an A3-sized poster or short Power Point/Key Note/Google Slides (or some other digital) display. 

In your presentation about your product, component, or equipment, you should show:

• A short background about it (where it comes from and when it was first made)
• What it is made of
• What the key components are - with measurements (if many, show only the most important components)
• Some drawing or other schema of it (any kind of engineering drawing – or if IT-related, an algorithm and/or program that is the basis of it)  
• A short explanation of how it works
• Its use, popularity, and/or impact in workplaces, schools, universities, research institutes, and so forth

Special notes:
In your speaking and writing, use some of the vocabulary that you have seen and learned from the textbook, especially from the units on components and assemblies and engineering design - though you are not limited to only vocabulary from those units. 

The summary you will write is not to be used as notes, however. It is a written preview of the presentation topic and what the contents of it are - it is not the presentation itself! You will only use the outline to speak from.

Both of these talks have Japanese subtitles (字幕), plus transcripts in English or Japanese that you can download.

Deadlines (締め切り) 

We will do the presentations and hand in the summaries and outlines on December 20th (12/20). So you have around three (3) weeks to prepare these. 

Special note: 
We have one (1) class only in January 2020 - on January 10 (1/10). It is our last class. We can use this as an extra presentation day for anyone who needs it - but we should try to go for presenting on 12/20 so we can get all the presentations finished and out of our way!

I will let you know about the method of evaluation after this week.

Here are the topics, deadline, & guidelines for our mid-term presentations, plus notes about writing summaries (要約).

Themes & topics

Here are your choice of themes & topics. They're based on what we've done so far, plus one unit on what we will do, in class. You can choose one (1) of these: 

• A transportation system in a part of another country (such as the New York subway)
• A unique sport in another country 
• A natural or man-made disaster and its impact on the people or the place involved 

Deadlines (締め切り)

Your presentation day will be on November 8th (11/8), so you have three (3) weeks to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present.

About summaries
Now let's look at summary writing. 

What is a summary? It's a short statement of purpose (SOP) about your presentation topic. 

It should begin with a short introduction showing a general background about the topic and any interesting points, issues, problems, or a situation, and what is unique or noteworthy about it. Then you should show directly what you will present about in these points, issues, problems, or situations. 

Here is an example of what a summary should look like, with the steps you should take when writing it. It's an example from a presenter who is going to speak about famous figures in science and technology - in this case, the rivalry between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. 

First, the presenter shows some general background to the topic: 

例えば：There have been many great partnerships, as well as rivalries, in the history of science and technology. Perhaps no rivalry was greater than that between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla.

Next, the presenter shows a connection between the background and what he/she will present or write about:

There have been many great partnerships, as well as rivalries, in the history of science and technology. Perhaps no rivalry was greater than that between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. While both figures are crucial in the development of the practical application of electricity to everyday life…

Then, the presenter comes in with what he/she will directly present or write about:

There have been many great partnerships, as well as rivalries, in the history of science and technology. Perhaps no rivalry was greater than that between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. While both figures are crucial in the development of the practical application of electricity to everyday life, this presentation/report will show that Edison may have been the greater figure given the numerous applications of electricity he made possible through his inventions. (71 words)

This summary runs to only 71 words in total. But it shows completely the background to the topic, and the presenter's purpose with the topic.

Guidelines

1. Prepare a summary about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week (来週).

2. Be ready for me to review your progress next week. I will require that you also practice your presentation in-class. You can practice with me and/or other groups of students.

3. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present on the day of your class!
