英語表現演習2 (金 2・3限): Tenerife airliner disaster・テネリフェ空港ジャンボ機衝突事故

Hello!

How are you? Today, let's look at the Tenerife airport disaster (テネリフェ空港ジャンボ機衝突事故) in 1977. Have you ever heard about it? If you haven't - then today you'll find out!

The map above shows where it happened - on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The Canary Islands are controlled by Spain

Below are two (2) maps of where the Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean

Activity/homework
Watch the video below. It is a re-creation of the accident

If you go to YouTube at this link, you can turn on Japanese subtitles (字幕if you need them.

As you watch, make notes about each step of events that led to the accident

Watch the video as many times as you want or need. What do you see that happened? How do you think it could have been prevented?

When you are finished, explain what happened to your classmates, based on what you watched plus your notes.

Discussion circles
Here are the questions for the leaders for our discussion circles.

Leader questions
For the summarizer:
Are you ready to summarize the reading/CD talk? (Can you give us your summary of the reading/CD talk?)

For the details master:
1. Where is Tenerife Island located?
2. Which two airlines’ planes were involved in the accident?
3. Why were the planes at this smaller airport instead of the larger one?
4. Describe as best you can what happened in the accident.
(Leaders: Think of 1-2 more details to ask the details master!)

For the vocabulary master:
What is aviation
What does it mean to accelerate
What is fog

What are fatalities
(Leaders: Think of 1-2 more words to ask the vocabulary master!)

See you next time!

英語表現演習2 (金 2・3限): Fall semester final presentations・後学期末発表

Hello!

How are you? Today I will show you our final presentation assignment for this class.

Themes
Here are your choice of themes. You can choose one (1) of these
  • A useful invention
  • Applications of marine biology
  • A major human error with engineering
  • Biological & biochemical phenomena
Topic notes about the themes:
useful invention could mean any engineered device large or small from the past or present.
An application of marine biology could mean something like for example, fish farming, ocean pollution, or the effects of climate change on the oceans.
human error of engineering could cover a topic such as, for example, the Titanic, where human error led to a disaster with a major work of engineering (like a ship).
Biological and biochemical phenomena could include topics such as the kind of climate needed to grow a certain kind of plant.

Deadline (締め切り)
Your presentations will be on December 20th (12/20), so you have three (3) weeks to prepare them.

Like before, we will mark each others' presentations with the same kind of mark sheet we used for the mid-term presentations. I will give you the evaluation sheets after this week.

Special note:

We have one (1) class only in January 2020 - on January 10 (1/10). It is our last class. We can use this as an extra presentation day for anyone who needs it - but we should try to go for presenting on 12/20 so we can get all the presentations finished and out of our way!

Guidelines
1. Prepare a rough draft about a summary (要約in your notebooks about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week

To refresh yourselves about what should go in a summarygo to this link here from our mid-term presentations blogpost.

2. Be ready for me to review your progress next week and for you to begin developing your displays. If anyone is ready to practice, I can make time for you to practice, and you can practice with me and/or other students who are also ready.

3. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present!

Good luck! I look forward to our presentation day!

英語表現演習2 (金 2・3限): Strange & interesting inventions・素晴らしい、変な発明

Hello!

How are you? Today we'll look at some strange and interesting inventions

Look at the picture at the top. What do you think this is? It looks like a hat with a radio receiver in it! In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many inventors played around with different things to try and develop new and useful things for people.

But before we begin, here are the board notes for our class from 11/15. The top one is for the EE2 2nd period class (2):

This next one is for the EE2 3rd period class (3):

Now let's look at an activity about strange and interesting inventions!

Activity/homework

Here is an activity for you for this topic - it's mostly for fun, but take a look at this. It's a video from YouTube made up of very old film clips of crazy inventions from the past:

Answer this question: Why do you think these inventions did not last? What were some reasons why they didn't work well?

Now finally, here are the board notes for our classes on 11/22. The top notes are for the EE2 2nd period class (2)

Now here are the notes for the EE2 3rd period class (3):

Have fun. See you next time!

Hello!

How are you? Today we'll look at some important discoveries and inventions of the Industrial Revolution (産業革命の発見、発明).

The picture above is of the Crystal Palace. This was a famous exhibition in London in the 19th century to show the accomplishments of the Industrial Revolution. Most of the exterior of the building was made of glass reinforced by steel. This exhibition was a great success that showed the British people what industry could do.

Activity/homework
Look at these pictures below. Which of these discoveries, inventions, or processes came from the Industrial RevolutionTake a guess! Have fun with these!

Cotton

The lathe

Cement

The light bulb

Gasoline

Steelmaking

How many do you think you got right? We'll check in class!

Discussion circles
Here are the questions for the leaders for our discussion circles. Remember that in any group(s) with only three (3) members, the leader is also the vocabulary master.

Leader questions
For the summarizer:
Are you ready to summarize the reading/CD talk? (Can you give us your summary of the reading/CD talk?)

For the detail master:
1. When did the Industrial Revolution begin?
2. How were things made before the Industrial Revolution?
3. What particular industry was quickly developed?
4. How was agriculture improved?
(Leaders: Think of 1-2 more details to ask the details master!)

For the vocabulary master:
What is agriculture
What are textiles
What does population mean?
What does income mean?
(Leaders: Think of 1-2 more words to ask the vocabulary master!)

Homework
Choose one (1) invention or discovery from the Industrial Revolution, and research about it. Note down some important facts about it - especially about anything mechanical or electrical - and find one (1) picture of it.

Bring it in and we'll share it in the next class. See you then!

英語表現演習2・4・e (金1・2・3・5・土 2限): 10/25 & 26 board notes (all classes)・10月25・26日のボードノート (全従業)

Hello!

How are you? This is a post for all my students on Friday and Saturday - the board notes for the week's classes on both Friday and Saturday

The post at the top is for my Friday 1st period EE4 class.

Now here are the other board notes for my other classes.

English Expression 2 (Friday 2nd & 3rd periods) and e-class (Friday 5th period)
Special note: Because the EE2 and e-classes are doing similar things with mid-term presentations, I decided to make one set of notes for all three classes - the Friday 2nd and 3rd period EE2 and the Friday 5th period e-class.

English Expression 4 (Saturday 2nd period)

So have a great time at the festival and see you in two weeks!

英語表現演習2 (金 2・3限): Mid-term short presentations・中間ショートプレゼンテーション

Hello!

How are you? Here are the topics, deadline, & guidelines for our mid-term presentations

Before we start, here are the board notes for our classes on 10/18 and 10/11

Now let's look at the mid-term presentation assignment!

Deadlines (締め切り)

You will prepare a 3-4 minute presentation that you will do on November 15th (11/15), so you have four (4) weeks to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present.

For your presentations, you have a choice of using Power Point or KeyNote, or making a small poster.

Themes (テーマ)
Here are your choice of themes. They're based on what we've done, and are doing, so far from the textbook in class. You can choose one (1) of these:
  • Issues and solutions about the environment (based on Unit 2 - the environment)
  • Facts and other interesting things about our solar system or space (Unit 3 - space)
Steps & guidelines
Here is the process of the steps and guidelines for how we will do these presentations.

1. Summaries (要約)
After you see this blogpost, you should choose a topic from the themes above. Then, start writing a short summary about the topic you want to present on in your notebooks. The summary will be due on October 25th (10/25)

Very important! Your summary should have these points about it:
  • A short background about the topic
  • What focus or viewpoint you will present about
Be ready for me to review your summary on 10/25. I will then show you some more about summaries in-class.

2. Outlines (あらすじ)

On 10/25 after showing you a little more about summaries, I will also have a handout about outlines. You will do some activities with outlines in-class, then begin working on your presentation outlines

We may have time in-class to start working on our presentations - so having your summary ready on 10/25 will be very important

3. Practice

On November 8th (11/8), I will show you some more guidelines about presenting. We will then make some time to practice our presentations in-class. You can practice with me and/or other group of students.

4. Finishing presentations
After 11/8, you will finalize your presentations outside of class and be ready to present on 11/15!

Good luck with these! I’ll look forward to working with you on your presentation skills, and seeing your great presentations.

See you next week!
