英語表現演習2・4・e (金1・2・3・5・土 2限): 10/25 & 26 board notes (all classes)・10月25・26日のボードノート (全従業)

Hello!

How are you? This is a post for all my students on Friday and Saturday - the board notes for the week's classes on both Friday and Saturday

The post at the top is for my Friday 1st period EE4 class.

Now here are the other board notes for my other classes.

English Expression 2 (Friday 2nd & 3rd periods) and e-class (Friday 5th period)
Special note: Because the EE2 and e-classes are doing similar things with mid-term presentations, I decided to make one set of notes for all three classes - the Friday 2nd and 3rd period EE2 and the Friday 5th period e-class.

English Expression 4 (Saturday 2nd period)

So have a great time at the festival and see you in two weeks!

英語表現演習4 (土 2限): Mid-term writing assignment・中間作文

Hello!

How are you? I hope you all got through the typhoon of last week with no problems!

In this post are the themes & topics, deadline, & guidelines for our mid-term writing assignment (中間作文).

Before we start, here are the board notes for our class on 10/19

Special note:
If you need some review or help about writing for this assignment, here are some links for all of you:

For some basics on writing sentences, paragraphs (段落), and style rules for names  in English - go to this link

For writing about processes (手順) - go to this link
For writing about cause & effect (原因結果) - go to this link
For writing conclusions (終わり) - go to this link

Now let's look at the mid-term writing assignment

Themes & topics
Here are your choice of topics. They're based on the themes what we've done so far in class - about DNAgenetics, and language, plus one we have not yet done but you can do on your own if it is more interesting for you - about twins (双子).

You can choose one (1) of these topics
  • Genetic origins of the Japanese people
  • How children learn/acquire language
  • Facts and/or applications about DNA
  • Genetic facts and other characteristics of twins
Now - if you have a different topic not on this list above, but that you want to do, and if it is related to our textbook themes so far - go for it! Let me look at it and I can give you advice and suggestions on it.

Guidelines
There is no set length, but I would like you to write as much as you can, perhaps around 3-4 paragraphs' worth of writing, more if possible. But if you believe you can write more than that, go for it! I will recognize and reward writing that has effort put into it for length. You may find that you will have to go longer because of your topic anyway.

Special note: Here is where the vocabulary you have seen in the textbook units becomes important and valuable for you.

Look at the vocabulary from the textbook units we've done so far in this class, plus any other words you may have found that were not on the vocabulary notes lists in the textbook. These would be the words that you could gather up and wrote on your worksheets.

Whichever unit has the most meaningful vocabulary for you - review that vocabulary on your worksheets and use it in your writing!

Important note: Please check this link about sentence and paragraph (段落) formatting and rules for writing names in English. It will help you with your writing!

Please type the final version of your paper up on Word. In our next class on  10/26, I will show you a format to follow about how to write your nameclassassignment, and date, plus title, on your assignment

Deadline (締め切り)
It will be November 9th (11/9), so you have three (3) weeks to research and writePlease hand in at the deadline, at the beginning of the class.

I want you to bring in your topic selections next week (10/26). If you can even start writing rough draft (下書き) of your topic, that will help you greatly. I'll give everyone time in class on 10/26 to do research and work on the rough drafts of the composition (作文). I will give some more details, and where I can, review your work.

Then you can work on the draft as you need to, then write to the finish and turn in your work on 11/9

Good luck! I’ll look forward to reading your great writing on these topics!

英語表現演習4 (金 1限): Mid-term writing assignment・中間作文

Hello!

How are you? Here is our mid-term writing assignment – writing about some particular materials, and devices or inventions that are made from those materials

Before we begin, here are the board notes for our class on 10/11:

Now let's look at the mid-term writing assignment!

Look at the picture at the top of this post. It is of a carbon filament, over a piece of human hair. As you can see it is very thin, but strong and useful. This has become one of the most useful materials of our time, used in so many things from carpets to aircraft.

Guidelines
You can choose any materials, and any innovative or useful device or invention from the present or the past made from those materials. It can involve inventions, devices, or technological innovations developed in Japan, or other countries, or invented or developed elsewhere and brought here.

For the part of your writing on inventions, devices, or other technological points, you can write about things that have a mix of different materials – but point out one (1) material that might be the most distinguishing feature, or perhaps was what made the invention or device unique or most useful.

When you write, you can think of these points:
  • What the materials are
  • Very important - what chemical properties (such as types of metals) they are made of
  • The characteristics (材質) of the materials
  • When they were first developed
  • What immediate applications (使用for things the materials have
  • Very important - what you believe to be the most innovative or useful thing or technological innovation made from these materials when writing about the invention or device you chose
  • Which individual material may be the most distinguishing or unique in the invention or device
  • What impact you believe the material has had in Japan or worldwide (optional point - including what personal impact it has had on you)
Special note: If the material or invention is no longer used  – what impact did the material or invention have in its time? Was it replaced by improved material, or a better invention? What made it go out of use (for example, was it made outdated by innovations in material technology, or an improved inventions)?

How much to write
I would like you to write a composition as long as you can, perhaps about 3-4 paragraphs' worth of writing, but more if possible.

If you believe you can write more than that, go for it! I will recognize and reward writing that you put effort into for length.

Your final draft has to be typed up, but your first draft (下書き) can be written by hand. I will show you a format in class next week (10/18) about how to write your nameclassassignmentdate, plus title

Deadline (締め切り)
November 8th (11/8), so you have almost three (3) weeks to do this.

I want you to bring in an idea for an invention and its materials next week (10/18). I will give some more details, and where I can, review your ideas. From there you can begin write a first draft (下書き), changing things about your ideas as you need to, then write to the finish and turn in your work on 11/8.

Good luck with this! I will post more on this assignment with support about outlining and writing. I look forward to reading your great writing on inventions and materials!

英語表現演習3 (土 2限): Mid-term writing assignment・中間作文

Hello!

How are you? Here are the themes & topics, deadline, & guidelines for our mid-term writing assignment (中間作文).

Before anything, here are the board notes from last week's (5/11) class

Now let's look at the mid-term writing assignment!

Themes & topics
Here are your choice of topics. They're based on the themes what we've done so far in class - about DNA, genetics, and language. You can choose one (1) of these topics
  • Genetic origins of the Japanese people
  • How children learn/acquire language
  • Facts and/or applications about DNA
  • Genetic facts and other characteristics of twins

Guidelines & how much to write

Because we have done some practice with summary writing, this may help you to be clear about what your topic is. So I recommend that you write a summary (要約) about the topic you want to present on. You do not have to write a summary - but if you do, let me look at it next week (来週).

There is no set length, but I would like you to write as much as you can, perhaps around 3-4 paragraphs' worth of writing, more if possible. But if you believe you can write more than that, go for it! I will recognize and reward writing that has had effort put into it for length. You may find that you will have to go longer if you have to.

Special notes: Here is where the vocabulary you have seen in the textbook units becomes important and valuable for you.

Look at the vocabulary from the textbook units we've done so far in this class - Units 1, 2, 3, & 4 - plus any other words you may have found that were not on the vocabulary notes lists in the textbook. These would be the words that you could gather up and wrote on your worksheets.

Whichever unit has the most meaningful vocabulary for you - review that vocabulary on your worksheets and use it in your writing!

Please type your paper up on Word. Next week (5/25), I will show you a format to follow about how to write your name, class, assignment, and date, plus title, on your assignment

Deadline (締め切り)
It will be June 8th (6/8), so you have three (3) weeks to research and writePlease hand in at the deadline.

While the syllabus shows a June 1st deadline, I have decided to give everyone one (1) extra week. So - hand in on June 8th.

I want you to bring in a rough draft (下書き) of a summary for the topic from the list you are most interested in next week (5/25). I'll give everyone time in class on 5/25 to do research and work on the rough drafts of the composition (作文).

Then on June 1st (6/1), bring your rough drafts of the composition writing in your notebooks in pen or pencil. I will give some more details, and where I can, review your work. Then you can change things about the draft as you need to, then write to the finish and turn in your work on June 8th (6/8).

Here are the board notes for today's (5/18) class:

Good luck! I’ll look forward to reading your great writing on these topics!
