英語表現演習3 (金): Final presentation & writing assignment・期末発表・作文

Hello!



How are you? Today I will give out the final assignment for this spring semester (前学期) - a presentation with a short written composition (作文) to go with it about a product, component, or piece of equipment.

Topic & task

Prepare a short presentation about any product, component, or piece of equipment used in, or is from, not only mechanical engineering but any field of technology. This could even include IT-related digital applications or components as well. 
 
Along with this presentation, you will also write a separate composition about the same topic - basically a written version of your presentation topicYou have a choice of handwriting or typing up on Word your written composition. 

Guidelines
You have a choice of making an A3-sized poster or short Power Point display. The written component will be a compositional version of your presentation topic – it should run from 3-4 paragraphs, the longer the better.

In your presentation and writing about your product, component, or equipment, you should show:
  • A short background about it (where it comes from and when it was first made)
  • What it is made of
  • What the key components are (if numerous, show only the most important)
  • Some drawing or other schema of it (any kind of engineering drawing – or if IT-related, an algorithm and/or program that is the basis of it) 
  • A short explanation of how it works
  • Its use, popularity, and/or application (使用) – workplaces, schools, universities, research institutes, and so forth
Special note:
In your speaking and writing, use some of the vocabulary that you have seen and learned from the textbook, especially from the units on components and assemblies and engineering design - though you are not limited to only vocabulary from those units. 

Deadlines (締め切り
We will do the presentations on July 20th (7/20), so you have three (3) weeks to prepare these. You will turn in the final writing composition on July 27th (7/27).

英語表現演習3 (金): Components & assemblies processes・部品と製造の工程

Hello!



How are you? Today let's slow down and focus a little more on components and assemblies (部品と製造) - this time by putting them together in talking about processes (工程). 

Look at the picture above. It looks crazy, doesn't it? It's an illustration by a famous 20th century American inventor, engineer, cartoonist, and sculptor named Rube Goldberg. He loved to invent machines with complex processes for doing simple things as a kind of engineering education. 

Here's a video showing a reproduction of another of Rube Goldberg's machines:




Activity 
Now that you have seen the video, now look at the picture at the top of the post and say what the process is. What do you think the man is trying to do with this "machine"? 

Homework
Now look at the following vocabulary of the things in the picture at the top:

A. Eating spoon
B. Spoon string
C. Cracker spoon
D. Cracker
E. Parrot
F. Bird feeder
G. Bird seed holder
H. Bucket
I.  Bucket string
J.  Small safe
K. Rocket
L.  Sickle
M. Sickle string
N. Napkin (from a clock)

In your notebooks, now write out the process as much as you can, using the vocabulary. Bring it next week and let's share how the process works.

英語表現演習3 (金・2): Components & assemblies problem solving・部品と製造の問題解決

Hello!




How are you? Today we'll keep looking at what we started last week on components and assemblies (部品と製造) - this time with problem solving on how they go together.  

Look at the illustration above. It shows the physics involved with balloons (風船) and how they expand (膨らむ) as they rise into the air, up to a point where they cannot deflate (風船に穴が空けない高度).

Today we'll do a reading in class about a real-life incident (事件) involving a man who tried to fly with balloons in his own way. It's a true story!


Activity

Below are some pictures that tell the story of the man and his balloon flight. What order do the pictures go in?

The components and their assemblies that you see give you hints as to what the man used, and did, before he went up on his balloon flight.


Work together with a partner to get the right order of the pictures. Let's try it!


When you're finished, let's try to tell the story of what the man didhow he did it, and what happened!

英語表現演習3 (金・2): International standards for electrical plugs & sockets・海外の配線用差込接続器

How are you? Today let's look at some international standards for electrical plugs and sockets.  

Look at the picture above. It's an illustration of a electrical plug and socket set from the U.S. from the early 20th century. It's very different from what we have today, isn't it? 

Activity 
Look at the pictures below. They show different configurations of plugs and sockets from different countries (and areas). Can you guess, and match, the correct configurations with the correct countries and areas? 

When you match, describe shapes and configurations as ways to help you guess, and try to remember, where the plugs and sockets might be used. 


例えば:A: This socket has two round holes, plus a third one that's semi-circular. The bottom one is the earth, and it's set in a little from the surface for the plug to go in. I'm guessing that it comes from Europe - maybe Northern Europe. I'm not sure, but that's my guess. What do you think? 


B: You might be right. We can look this up on the internet. So how about this one? It has three pins on the plug, and the earth is set in a different direction. Where do you think you'd find this? I think maybe in...
