英語表現演習2 (金 2・3限): Mid-term short presentations・中間ショートプレゼンテーション

Hello!

How are you? Here are the topics, deadline, & guidelines for our mid-term presentations

Before we start, here are the board notes for our classes on 10/18 and 10/11

Now let's look at the mid-term presentation assignment!

Deadlines (締め切り)

You will prepare a 3-4 minute presentation that you will do on November 15th (11/15), so you have four (4) weeks to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present.

For your presentations, you have a choice of using Power Point or KeyNote, or making a small poster.

Themes (テーマ)
Here are your choice of themes. They're based on what we've done, and are doing, so far from the textbook in class. You can choose one (1) of these:
  • Issues and solutions about the environment (based on Unit 2 - the environment)
  • Facts and other interesting things about our solar system or space (Unit 3 - space)
Steps & guidelines
Here is the process of the steps and guidelines for how we will do these presentations.

1. Summaries (要約)
After you see this blogpost, you should choose a topic from the themes above. Then, start writing a short summary about the topic you want to present on in your notebooks. The summary will be due on October 25th (10/25)

Very important! Your summary should have these points about it:
  • A short background about the topic
  • What focus or viewpoint you will present about
Be ready for me to review your summary on 10/25. I will then show you some more about summaries in-class.

2. Outlines (あらすじ)

On 10/25 after showing you a little more about summaries, I will also have a handout about outlines. You will do some activities with outlines in-class, then begin working on your presentation outlines

We may have time in-class to start working on our presentations - so having your summary ready on 10/25 will be very important

3. Practice

On November 8th (11/8), I will show you some more guidelines about presenting. We will then make some time to practice our presentations in-class. You can practice with me and/or other group of students.

4. Finishing presentations
After 11/8, you will finalize your presentations outside of class and be ready to present on 11/15!

Good luck with these! I’ll look forward to working with you on your presentation skills, and seeing your great presentations.

See you next week!

英語表現演習1 (金 3・4限): Mid-term short presentations & summary writing・中間ショートプレゼンテーション・要約を書いて

Hello!

How are you? Today I will show you about our mid-term (中間) presentations, with information about summary writing (要約を書いて).

First, let's look at the mid-term presentation assignment.

Topics
Here are your choice of topics. They're based on what we've done so far in class. You can choose one (1) of these:

Issues and solutions about the environment
Facts and other interesting things about our solar system or space

Deadlines (締め切り)
Your presentation day will be on May 31st (5/31), so you have three (3) week(s) to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present

Guidelines
1. Prepare a rough draft (下書き) of a summary about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week (5/17).

About summaries

Now let's look at summary writing

What is a summary? It's a short statement of purpose (SOP) about your presentation topic. It should begin with a short introduction showing the topic and any issues, problems, or a situation, and the interesting or important points about it. Then you should show that you will then present about what these issue, problem, situation, and the points about it are.

It should be short, and indicate (指し示して) what aspect of the topic (話題の向きyou will present on. Here is an example of what a summary should look like, with the number of words after it

例えば:While the Earth has the volume of water to support life, researchers believe that some form of water, such as water vapor, exists on some of the other planets of the Solar System. This presentation will look at the planets in our Solar System that are likely to have water, and what kinds of life they may be able to support. (61 words)

2. You have the choice to fill in the topic preparation sheet that comes with the handout. You do not have to use it if you don't want to - but you may find it very useful. This is a working record of your preparation about your topic.

* You will also see, on the other side of the sheet, a classmates' presentation evaluation form, with a space at the top for you to write your final version of the summary.

This part of the form you will hand in to me. On it, you write your summary - but then you mark your classmates' presentations.

3. Be ready for me to review your progress next week and for you to practice your presentation in-class. You can practice with me and/or other group of students.

4. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present on the day of your class!

Good luck! See you next time!

英語表現演習4 (金・土): Final presentation final post・期末発表最後のポスト

Hello!

How are you? Here is the final post for all of you on some extra final guidelines for your final presentations next week.

The picture above is an example of a summary in engineering (工学). Look at each part of it.

The first part gives you a background to the topic. The next part shows a little more focus why the topic is important and worth presenting about. The last sentence shows exactly what the presenter will show in your presentation

Final guidelines

These guidelines are very important and will not change. Please read and check these carefully!

1. Please come with your group members at your group's correct time schedule on time! Do not be late!

If you are more than 10 minutes late for your group - you cannot do the presentation, and you will get a zero for the presentation assignment. There will be no makeup (補講), so you really have to be here.

2. Please be 100% ready with your finished summary, finished outline, and presentation display

Bring your own laptop computer or tablet with you if you're doing a digital display like Power Point or Key Note. Make sure your battery is charged up to 100% or close to it. Back your display up on a USB.

3. When you are checking your group members' presentations, check them honestly! I will take up to 20 points off your own presentation score if you are a lazy checker!

*New note - here is a screenshot of the evaluation form that all of you will use to evaluate each others' presentations (look at this on a computer or make the screenshot larger on your smartphones to see the details more clearly):

Here is an example of how one student would mark her evaluation form for the other three members of her group on the day of the presentations (again - look at this on a computer or make the shot larger on your smartphone to see it more clearly) :

So the others would mark her presentation when it is her time to present in the same way, and so on.

I will make an average (平均) of your presentation scores by your group members' checking to show a final spoken presentation score average for you.

About final presentation assignment grading

These final presentations are 40% of your whole final grade for the class. You can get a maximum of:

20% - for your spoken presentation score average
(平均)

20% - for your summary and outline

So all together, this complete assignment is the spoken presentation, the summary and the outline, and is worth a maximum of 40%

That is why next week is very important

*New extra special note for the Saturday 2nd period English Expression 4 class: I will give every one of you an additional, free 5% bonus towards your final grade because I had to inconveniently cancel the classes I did and re-arrange the syllabus this semester.

Once again, I'm very sorry about these cancellations!

Special recommendation

Now that you have selected your groups, I recommend that you get together outside of class and practice your presentations with each other using only your outlines

Remember that each person is presenting for around 5-6 minutes on the presentation day, so you should prepare something that could take you to that time - but Q&A during your presentation from your group members is okay and will help you!

Check the paper handouts I have given you about outlines again. Remember - keywords and phrases only! In addition - do not use your summaries as notes to read from!

The topic itself is more important than the words. The words will come to you if you have a good summary that makes it clear to you what your topic is and what you will present about it, and an outline with keywords and phrases that are organized hints for the ideas and details on what you talk about.

I have to be strict about how the presentations will go because I want to see all of you do the best work you can do, and pass the class!

Good luck! See you at your time schedule with your group members next week!

While I have already given you the handouts about the presentations, I will post these here again so you can have another way to remember what you have to do.

Topics
Here are your choice of topics. They're based on what we've done so far in class. You can choose one (1) of these:

Issues and solutions about the environment

Deadlines (締め切り)
Your presentation day will be on June 1st (6/1), so you have two (2) week(s) to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present.

NEW NOTE - here are the presentation groups for the 3rd period (3限):

Here are the presentation groups for the 4th period (4限):

Guidelines
1. Prepare a summary (要約) with your partners about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week

NEW NOTE ABOUT SUMMARIES - here is an example of what a summary should look like

例えば:While the Earth has the volume of water to sustain life, researchers believe that traces of water exist on the other planets of the Solar System. In our presentation, we will look at the planets in our Solar System that are likely to have water, and if so, what kinds of life they may be able to sustain.

The summary should have a short introduction showing the topic and any issues or problems, or interesting points about it. Then you and your partner should show that you will then present on what these issues, problems, or points are. It should be short, and indicate (指し示して) what aspect of the topic (話題の向きyou will present on

2. With your classmates, fill in the topic preparation sheet that comes with the handout. There is a section on it to fill out the summary. This is a working record of your group’s preparation about your topic.

3. Be ready for me to review your progress next week and for your group to practice your presentation in-class. You can practice with me and/or other group of students.
