英語表現演習4 (金 1限): Bases of common materials・一般な物質の素

Hello! 

How are you? Today here are some pictures that each show a basis of some common material (物質). 

Let's look at one example - glass. Look at the beautiful stained glass in the picture at the top. Before anything, what would be one thing you need to make glass? 

You first need silica sand, which you can see below: 

You would also need limestone, which you can also see here:

These are examples of two (2) things you would need to make glass.

Activity/homework
So let's try this! Look at these pictures below. Can you guess which bases you need to form some common materials? Can you match the right materials to the right bases? In addition, can you think of some other possible bases on your own that you might need to make these common materials? 

Here are the materials:

plastic     paper     steel     rubber       

Here are the bases: 

oil       latex     iron     

  water     carbon     pulp

Hello!

How are you? Today, let's look at how to describe materials (材質を描写して). 

Take a look at the steel tubes above. How would you describe their material? You could say that they are hard and strong, as well as heavy. 

You could also add more to your description - you could say they are durable and robust - this means they can be used for a long time, and they're tough. 

Finally, you could also think of some examples of how the material is used. 

So maybe you could say - The steel in these tubes are hard and strong, as well as durable and robust. It's ideal for all kinds of industrial use, and in everything from construction work to ship building.

Look at the pictures of these things below. How would you describe the materials? What uses are they good for?

Hello!

How are you? Today, let's look at how to describe materials (材質を描写して). 

Take a look at the tires above. How would you describe their material? First, they are made of rubber (ゴム「護謨」). You could say that the rubber in these tires are hard and strong, but also flexible. 

You could also add more to your description - you could say they are durable and robust - this means they can be used for a long time, and they're tough. 

Finally, you could also think of some examples of how the material is used. 

So maybe you could say - The rubber in these tires are hard and strong, but also flexible. Its qualities make it durable and robust. Rubber is ideal for all kinds of industrial use, and in everything from household goods to industrial production.

Finally, you could also think of some examples of how the material is used. 

So maybe you could say - The steel in these bars are hard and strong, as well as durable. Steel is ideal for all kinds of industrial use, and in everything from building construction to ship building.

Look at the pictures of these things below. How would you describe the characteristics of their materials?

New - homework

Here are the notes for your homework for next week (10/5): 

Choose a material - anything is okay (metal, non-metal, composite, or alloy). On the internet, find one (1) picture of the material - download it onto your smartphone or print it out (a black-and-white picture is also okay). 

Write a few sentences on a piece of notebook paper about the material's characteristics, and what products, components, or equipment the material is used in. 

Bring your notes plus the picture to the next class on 10/5, and make a quick, 1-2 minute "presentation" to the group of students you sit with about it.
