英語表現演習1 (金 3・4限): Discoveries & inventions of the Industrial Revolution・産業革命の発見・発明

Hello!

How are you? Today we'll look at some important discoveries and inventions of the Industrial Revolution (産業革命の発見、発明).

The picture above is of the Crystal Palace. This was a famous exhibition in London in the 19th century to show the accomplishments of the Industrial Revolution. Most of the exterior of the building was made of glass reinforced by steel. This exhibition was a great success that showed the British people what industry could do.

Activity/homework
Look at these pictures below. Which of these discoveries or inventions came from the Industrial Revolution? Take a guess! Have fun with these!

Cotton

The lathe

Cement

The light bulb

Gasoline

Steelmaking

How many do you think you got right? We'll check in class!

Discussion circles
Here are the questions for the leaders for our discussion circles.

Leader questions
For the summarizer:
Are you ready to summarize the reading/CD talk? (Can you give us your summary of the reading/CD talk?)

For the details master:
1. When did the Industrial Revolution begin?
2. How were things made before the Industrial Revolution?
3. What particular industry was quickly developed?
4. How was agriculture improved?
(Leaders: Think of 1-2 more details to ask the details master!)

For the vocabulary master:
What is agriculture?
What are textiles?
What does population mean?
What does income mean?
(Leaders: Think of 1-2 more words to ask the vocabulary master!)

英語表現演習3 (金 2限): Precision & accuracy・精度、確度

Hello!

How are you? Today, here is a post with an activity about precision and accuracy in engineering measurement.

In Japanese, precision and accuracy have the same word - 精度. But strictly speaking, precision and accuracy are not exactly the same thing in English.

In English, precision means when you do an action and get similar results each time. But accuracy would mean when you get a result that is very close to the measurement that you most need.

So perhaps accuracy, in Japanese, would mean more like the best degree of precision, or 確度. For engineering measurement, 確度 for accuracy might be a better word.

The picture above would be an example of an archery target, with an archer who was both precise (的確) and accurate (正確).

Activity/homework

Here is an activity about measuring some differences in precision and accuracy. The idea and illustrations come from the University of British Columbia in Canada Open Text website for their engineering students.

These are the results of four different archers. Which one is the most precise? Which one is the most accurate? Which one is the least precise and accurate? Write a few notes about these and e
xplain your ideas to your classmates!

例:I think #1 is…because...

Archer #1

Archer #2

Archer #3

Archer #4

So what are your results?

英語表現演習3 (金 2限): Engineering measurement・工務の測定、寸法

Hello!

How are you? The picture above is of the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer. It set a record for flying around the world in a little under 77 hours, at the highest average speed for an aircraft without inflight refueling at 551/kmph.

Quite impressive, isn't it? But for its performance, it isn't the largest or most powerful aircraft ever built. Just how large is it - for example, its length?

Today, let's look more at how to accurately measure some examples of works of engineering.

Activity/homework
Look at the pictures below. Search out the measurements of these examples of engineering in terms of the following:
  • overall length
  • overall height
  • width (in various parts)
Important notes:
With aircraft - remember for your measurements to find out not only the overall length and overall height, but the maximum cabin width and fuselage width as well, plus the wingspan.

With bridges - find out not only the overall length, but also the height of the tallest support from the ground. You also need the width, plus thickness, of the decks. In addition, you need the maximum span between the supports.

With buildings - search out not only the overall height, but the width of the base of the buildings at their thickest plus average width of the building if this is different from the base. Find out as well what the length of any structures are that might be on the building (such as towers at the top) plus the length and width of any structures such as elevated walkways or bridges from the building (if they exist).

Let's start! Note these measurements in your notebooks (and hand in next class if we do this as homework)!

1. Queen Mary 2

2. The Concorde

3. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

4. Tianjin Grand Bridge, China

5. Rainbow Bridge

I hope you can find some useful information that perhaps might surprise you about these aircraft and other structures.
