英語表現演習3 (土 2限): Vocabulary for crimes・犯罪の言葉

Hello!

How are you? Look at the picture above. It shows barrier tape for a crime scene (犯罪場所) - a place where a crime (犯罪) has happened.

Today, one of our readings will involve issues of crime, and people who have been accused (問われた) of crimes.

What is some vocabulary for some crimes in English? What words do you know?

Activity/homework

Look at these words:

arson     robbery     murder     burglary

     embezzlement     theft     assault

Can you match the words to the right pictures? Try it!

Have fun guessing these! See you next time!

英語表現演習1 (金 3・4限): Names of fish in English for sushi・寿司魚の英名

Hello!

How are you? Today we'll begin our view of aquaculture, plus look further at oceanography, with one of the most basic things we find in our oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers - the fish for sushi!

Before we begin, however, let's look at our board notes from our classes on 6/14:

Now let's look at fish for sushi!

Activity
Look at the picture above - then look at the same picture below. Can you go through and match the name in English of the fish to the number?

These are the names of the fish in English:

sea eel               tuna               squid               salmon roe

fatty tuna              sea urchin              tuna roll               shrimp

Now - don't go to your dictionary! Try this: Matching the names in English to the right number in the picture with these hints:

1. This has lots of fish eggs, from a fish with the same name in both English and Japanese.
2. Has a very short name in Japanese; in English it has two parts to the name, and the second part means "naughty child."
3. As the name suggests in English, it curls up in a spiral in itself.
4. As the name also suggests in English, it's an "overweight" fish.
5. This is a common fish in other countries as well; Americans make sandwiches with it!
6. This also can be found in rivers; it's long, and makes for a good one to eat in summer.
7. The name for this in English is also a slang word for something small.
8. This one is slippery and comes in many varieties - including one that squirts out black ink!

Discussion circles
Here are the questions for the leaders for our discussion circles.

Leader questions
For the summarizer:
Are you ready to summarize the reading/CD talk? (Can you give us your summary of the reading/CD talk?)

For the details master:
1. When did fish farming first develop?
2. Which continent produces the majority of fish farming?
3. Around what precentage of fish comes from farms?
4. Name four examples of fish that are commonly produced.
(Leaders: Think of 1-2 more details to ask the details master!)

For the vocabulary master:
What are hormones?
What are antibiotics?
What is feed?
What is cage farming?
(Leaders: Think of 1-2 more words to ask the vocabulary master!)

I hope this helps you with your understanding of this topic.

Have fun! See you next time!

英語表現演習1 (金 3・4限): Spring semester final presentations・前学期末発表

Hello!

How are you? Today I will show you about our final presentations for this class.

Themes
Here are your choice of themes. You can choose one (1) of these:
  • A useful invention
  • Applications of marine biology
  • A major human error with engineering
  • Biological & biochemical phenomena
Topic notes about the themes:
A useful invention could mean any engineered device large or small from the past or present.
An application of marine biology could mean something like for example, fish farming, ocean pollution, or the effects of climate change on the oceans.
A human error of engineering could cover a topic such as, for example, the Titanic (the ship in the picture at the top), where human error led to a disaster with a major work of engineering.
Biological and biochemical phenomena could include topics such as the kind of climate needed to grow a certain kind of plant.

Deadline (締め切り)
Your presentations will be on two (2) dates - July 12th (7/12) and July 19th (7/19), so you have three to four (3-4) weeks to prepare them.

You will have a choice on which day you can present - with the rule that there has to be a balance of numbers of students between both days.

Like before, we will mark each others' presentations with the same kind of mark sheet we used for the mid-term presentations. I will give you the evaluation sheets after this week.

Please be ready on your day to present.

Guidelines
1. Prepare a rough draft about a summary (要約) in your notebooks about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week.

To refresh yourselves about what should go in a summary, go to this link here from our mid-term presentations blogpost.

2. Be ready for me to review your progress next week and for you to begin developing your displays and in two (2) weeks,  practicing your presentation in-class. You can practice with me and/or other groups of students.

* This is very important! We will practice on July 6th (7/6). You don't have to have the presentation 100% finished - but you have to have enough content so you can practice!

3. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present on your day!

Finally - here are the board notes for our classes on 6/21:

Good luck! I look forward to our presentation day!

英語表現演習3 (金 2限): Spring semester final assignment・前期末発表

Hello!

How are you? Today I will show you the spring semester final assignment - a presentation with an outline and a written  summary (要約) about a product, component, or piece of equipment.

Before we start, however, here are the board notes from our class on 6/14:

Now let's look at the final assignment!

Topic & task

Prepare a short presentation about any product,  component, or piece of equipment used in, or is from, not only mechanical engineering but any field of technology now or in our own time. This could even include IT-related digital applications or components as well.

Along with this presentation, you will also write a short separate summary showing what you will present about.

Guidelines
You have a choice of making an A3-sized poster or short Power Point display.

In your presentation about your product, component, or equipment, you should show:

  • A short background about it (where it comes from and when it was first made)
  • What it is made of
  • What the key components are - with measurements (if many, show only the most important components)
  • Some drawing or other schema of it (any kind of engineering drawing – or if IT-related, an algorithm and/or program that is the basis of it)
  • A short explanation of how it works
  • Its use, popularity, and/or impact in workplaces, schools, universities, research institutes, and so forth
Special notes:
In your speaking and writing, use some of the vocabulary that you have seen and learned from the textbook, especially from the units on components and assemblies and engineering design - though you are not limited to only vocabulary from those units.

The summary you will write is not to be used as notes, however. It is a written preview of the presentation topic and what the contents of it are - it is not the presentation itself! You will only use the outline to speak from.

Some starting resources

Here are two (2) links to TED Talks relating to engineering that could help you on topic ideas. Watch these for ideas.

David Lang - My underwater robot (2013.02) - click on this link for this talk.

Keller Rinaud – A mini robot – powered by your phone (2013.02) - click on this link for this talk.

Both of these talks have Japanese subtitles (字幕), plus transcripts in English or Japanese that you can download.

Now here are two (2) videos on presentation tips and hints, with one about engineering presentation. You can also get Japanese subtitles with these:

Deadlines (締め切り)
We will do the presentations and hand in the summaries and outlines on two (2) dates - July 12th (7/12) and July 19th (7/19). So you have around one (1) month to prepare these.

You will have a choice on which day you can present - with the rule that there has to be a balance of numbers of students between both days.

I will give you the evaluation sheets after this week.

Finally - here are the board notes for our class on 6/21:

Good luck! I look forward to seeing your choices of topics!
