英語表現演習3 (土): Japan's indigenous people - the Ainu・日本の先住民族「アイヌ」

Hello!

How are you? Today let's look at Japan's own indigenous people (先住民族) - the Ainu.

Let's look at the picture above. It's a map of Japan showing the original area, plus the widest places, of the Ainu. Do you know who the Ainu are? They are a group of Japan's indigenous people.

At one time they lived from the northeastern part of the Tohoku, all of Hokkaido, and the way up through Sakhalin Island (what many older Japanese call Karafuto「樺太」) and even up through the Kuril Islands (千島列島).

But now they only live in Hokkaido. Their numbers are small, and they have married regular Japanese people enough so that they do not look so different. But they are proud of their culture and traditions.

Genetic testing shows that most Ainu belong to Y-haplogroup D-M55 (ハプログループD1b 「Y染色体」) , and have a higher frequency of Y-DNA haplogroup D1b than most Japanese.

Activity
Since genetic testing shows that the Ainu have some characteristics that make them at least somewhat different from most Japanese, here's an activity

What do you think are the origins of the Ainu? Are they a completely indigenous (先住民) people, or did they come from somewhere else? If so, where did they come from, and how did they get to Japan?

Here are two maps showing two ideas about where the Ainu might genetically come from:

Talk about your ideas - most importantly, give some reasons why you think so. If you believe they came from elsewhere, draw a rough map of where you believe they came from.

Take care! Have a great Golden Week!

英語表現演習3 (金): Space elevator・軌道エレベーター

Hello!

How are you? Today let's look at a concept related to what we've been learning about with the offshore base station in class - a space elevator.

Look at the picture above. It's an artist's impression of a space elevator to a space station.

Activity
Look at the pictures below. They show some different ideas about the concept of a space elevator and the engineering and mechanics for it.

This activity is related to our textbook, both to the part about space elevators and the part about offshore base stations

As you talk about the solutions for the part on the offshore base station, do any of the following pictures help give you hints about the solutions? Talk about the pictures themselves. What do they show? How do they connect as ideas to the offshore base station?

I hope these help you with your discussion.

Take care and have a great Golden Week! See you in two weeks!

英語表現演習3 (土): Beginning understanding genetics・遺伝学の初めて理解

Hello!

How are you? Today, to go with our first reading, here is a short and funny, but informative animated video, about genetics (遺伝学).

While you may understand the basic building blocks of genetics, this video may show it in a simple yet effective way.

Watch this video and take some notes. What might be the most important points the video makes?

Activity
Imagine that you have to explain about genetics to someone who doesn't know much about it. Based on this video, how would you explain it? What kinds of things would you say?

You can use easy English for this - in fact, the easier, the better! Have fun with this!

I hope you enjoy this. See you next week!

英語表現演習1 (金): National parks ・国際・国立公園

Hello!

How are you? Today let's look at national parks (国際・国立公園) in different countries

The picture above shows the famous Itsukushima Shrine, which some of you may have been to. But did you know that it is within a national park? It's in Setonaikai National Park. Have you ever been there? If you have been to Itsukushima Shrine, then you have been to a national park.

Activity
Do you know where these places are? These are pictures from national parks in different countries. Can you guess which countries they are in?

Talk about these places with your classmates! What are some things you think you could see or do in these places?

英語表現演習3 (金): Describing things・物・事の描写

Hello!

How are you? Today let's look at describing things (物を描写). What is this picture at the top? What do you call it in English? What is it used for?

Activity
Look at these pictures. What's this first one? With a partner, describe it (その物を描写する). Do not let your partner see the picture!

例:

A: This is something you use when building a bookcase; a carpenter uses it when building a house. What is it?
B: (It's a …)
A: OK! Good. Now how do you use it?
B: Well, first you pick it up, then you...

Without seeing the pictures - take turns with your partners guessing what these things are, and describing how to use or what to do with them - or what they are used for. Try it!

Welcome to this blog! このブログにようこそ!

Hello!

How are you? Welcome to my blog, The Korakuen Times! This is my unofficial (非公式) blog for all my classes of the Chuo University Korakuen campus. On it I will post videos, pictures and other things for you for our classes. You can write comments here too. We can have fun in these classes!

Now - I will show you a little bit about myself. The picture above is my "hello" to all of you. The picture looks a little strange. It's not me - it's an image from a CD cover! But I like the image and the colors.

Activity
Now here are some more pictures, with questions for all of you. Can you guess some answers?

See you in class!
