英語表現演習3 (土): Food & drink preferences・飲食の好き嫌い

Hello!

How are you? Today let's look at food and drink preferences (飲食の好き嫌い)!

Look at the picture above. It's a model of the ALDH2 protein. This contains an enzyme (酵素) that is responsible for the absorption (吸収) of alcohol. The lack of a mutation (突然変異) in this gene is the reason most East Asian people get drunk from alcohol so easily.

Activity

Look at the pictures below. Each one of these items have things in them that can give you a certain feeling or reaction. Talk about them!

So - how do you feel, or what effect do you feel, when you have some

Milk

Chocolate

Natto

Beer

Have fun with this! See you!

英語表現演習3 (土): Final presentation & writing assignment・期末発表・作文

Hello!

Here is our spring semester final presentation & writing assignment

While I have given all of you the handout about the assignment, I am posting about it here as well as another way to help remind you about it.

Topics & task
Here are your choice of topics. They're based on what we've done so far in class since the mid-term (中間). You can choose one (1) of these:

     •    Genetic modification in food and plants or traits in humans
     •    Ethical and legal issues of DNA application
     •    Genetic facts, traits, and behaviors of certain animals
     •    Medical possibilities and/or ethical issues in cloning

Guidelines
1. Prepare a summary (要約) about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week (来週).

2. Along with the presentation, you will write a short composition (作文about your presentation topic – it should run from 2-4 paragraphs, the longer the better.

Deadlines (締め切り
We will do the presentations on July 21st (7/21), so you have three (3) weeks to prepare these. You will then turn in the written composition about your topic on July 28th (7/28).

Special note:
In your speaking and writing, use some of the vocabulary that you have seen and learned from the textbook, though you are not limited to only vocabulary from those units.

But – you cannot use your written composition as a script for your presentation!

Good luck! I look forward to seeing, and reading about, your choices of topics.

英語表現演習1 (金): Tenerife airliner disaster・テネリフェ空港ジャンボ機衝突事故

Hello!

How are you? Today, let's look at the Tenerife airport disaster (テネリフェ空港ジャンボ機衝突事故) in 1977. Have you ever heard about it? If you haven't - then today you'll find out!

The map above shows where it happened - on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The Canary Islands are controlled by Spain. The map below shows where Tenerife is located in the Canary Islands:

Below is a map of where the Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean

Watch the video below. It is a recreation of the accident. As you watch, you can turn on English subtitles (字幕) and make notes about each step of events that led to the accident.

Watch the video as many times as you want or need. What do you see that happened? How do you think it could have been prevented? Talk about what you saw from the notes you made.

See you next time!

英語表現演習3 (金): Final presentation & writing assignment・期末発表・作文

Hello!

How are you? Today I will give out the final assignment for this spring semester (前学期) - a presentation with a short written composition (作文) to go with it about a product, component, or piece of equipment.

Topic & task

Prepare a short presentation about any product, component, or piece of equipment used in, or is from, not only mechanical engineering but any field of technology. This could even include IT-related digital applications or components as well.

Along with this presentation, you will also write a separate composition about the same topic - basically a written version of your presentation topicYou have a choice of handwriting or typing up on Word your written composition.

Guidelines
You have a choice of making an A3-sized poster or short Power Point display. The written component will be a compositional version of your presentation topic – it should run from 3-4 paragraphs, the longer the better.

In your presentation and writing about your product, component, or equipment, you should show:
  • A short background about it (where it comes from and when it was first made)
  • What it is made of
  • What the key components are (if numerous, show only the most important)
  • Some drawing or other schema of it (any kind of engineering drawing – or if IT-related, an algorithm and/or program that is the basis of it)
  • A short explanation of how it works
  • Its use, popularity, and/or application (使用) – workplaces, schools, universities, research institutes, and so forth
Special note:
In your speaking and writing, use some of the vocabulary that you have seen and learned from the textbook, especially from the units on components and assemblies and engineering design - though you are not limited to only vocabulary from those units.

Deadlines (締め切り
We will do the presentations on July 20th (7/20), so you have three (3) weeks to prepare these. You will turn in the final writing composition on July 27th (7/27).

Good luck! I look forward to seeing, and reading about, your choices of topics!
